The history of Costa de la Luz is closely connected to the Red Tuna of the Almadraba. The Almadraba´s (an arabic word meaning to battle or fight) are also important in the history of this location. It is an art of fishing consisting in making underwater laberynths with nets or rocks to trap the tuna during migration. We still use the ones left behind 3000 years ago by the phoenicians, which the romans and arabs later used as well. We must also mention the Gulf of Cádiz, and the Straights of Gibraltar, as well as the events that have taken place in their waters during the course of history. Our current history speaks of tourism and economic growth. The history of Costa de la Luz is owed to the history that the phoenicians, romans, and arabs left behind. From them we have conquered the art of fishing the world renown red tuna. From this type of tuna they made their Garum sauce, which the roman empire considered a delicacy. We must also mention the discovery of America, Palos de la Frontera, Seville, Moguer, Cádiz etc. They are all a part of our history as well. Christopher Columbus roamed these places searching for experienced mariners before parting to discover the new world. These mariners were chosen to be aboard the Niña, the Pinta and the Santa María which have forever left their names carved in history. Continuing our travel through time we must highlight another important historic date. The battle of Trafalgar in October of 1805. This battle took place in the coast of Cadiz. The spanish and french allied against the british but still lost, but Admiral Nelson did die in this battle.
After this historic event, they presented the first Spanish Constitution of 1812, also known as PEPA.
We continue our stroll through time arriving in the XX century, a century that went from living from agriculture, and fishing in Cádiz, and agriculture, fishing and mining in Huelva, to living off tourism. During this century tourism has grown in this area in locations such as Caños de Meca, Tarifa, Zahara de los Atunes, Conil, Isla Antilla, Punta Umbria, Cartaya, Matalascañas and Lepe to name a few. They are tourism reference points, and have developed and ample range of accomodation infrastructures, such as hotels, hostels, apartments, villas/chalets, and camp grounds. |
